SockMonkey.com is a travel guide and a set of daily geography games, hosted by Tally the sock monkey. This page describes the information the site handles, who receives it and why.
The short version:
- Your game progress and map marks are saved in your own browser, not on our servers.
- Cloudflare hosts the site and counts visits for us with Cloudflare Web Analytics.
- If you email us, we receive your email address and your message.
Who we are: SockMonkey.com. Contact: hello@sockmonkey.com.
What is saved on your device
The games, the map and the passport save your progress in your browser’s own storage (called “local storage”). The site’s code reads it in your browser and doesn’t send it to our servers.
What gets saved:
- Map marks: the places you mark as “someday” or “been there”, and the relics you win.
- Games: for each game, the puzzles you’ve played, your guesses, how many clues you used, the time, and your streak.
- Hard-to-Reach quiz (preview): your answers, if you tick “Remember”. “Forget” deletes them.
Clearing it: the “Clear my data on this device” button on your passport deletes the items above from that browser. You can also clear this site’s data in your browser settings (often under “Site settings” or “Cookies and site data”). There’s no copy on our side, so once it’s cleared it can’t be restored.
Private or incognito windows usually delete it when you close them.
Visit counts (analytics)
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and see which pages load slowly. Cloudflare says that Web Analytics:
- uses no cookies and stores nothing on your device;
- doesn’t identify or “fingerprint” individual visitors by IP address or browser details;
- removes IP addresses before the data reaches our reports.
Our reports show totals, such as page views per page and per country. Some browsers and content blockers stop Web Analytics from loading.
Hosting
Cloudflare hosts the site. Like any web host, it receives the standard details your browser sends with each request: your IP address, browser type, the page you asked for and the page you came from. Our Cloudflare account shows us summary statistics from this, such as requests per day and security events. Cloudflare’s privacy policy describes how Cloudflare uses and keeps this information.
Our pages don’t set cookies. Cloudflare says that when some of its bot-protection features are switched on, it sets a short-lived security cookie (__cf_bm); its documentation lists the cookies it can set.
If you email us
Emailing hello@sockmonkey.com (for example to suggest a place) gives us your email address and whatever you write. Our mailbox is hosted by Microsoft 365. We use your message to read and answer it.
We keep emails for as long as we need them to deal with what you wrote about.
Other websites and browser signals
Links to other sites (such as photo sources and official advisories) take you to sites that have their own privacy policies.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control: the site doesn’t change how it behaves when your browser sends these signals. The other companies that receive information when you use the site are the ones named on this page: Cloudflare and, if you email us, Microsoft.
Age
SockMonkey.com is for people 16 and over. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone younger. If you think a child under 16 has emailed us, tell us at hello@sockmonkey.com so we can delete it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask to see, correct or delete the information we hold about you, which is mainly emails you’ve sent us. Write to hello@sockmonkey.com. We may ask you to confirm the request comes from that email address. The data saved in your browser is yours to clear (see above).
If you’re in the UK or the EU, you can also complain to your data protection authority (in the UK, the ICO).
Changes
If we change this notice, we post the new version on this page and change the date at the top.
