Etosha

Everywhere else, a safari means going to find the animals. Here the pan is too salt and too dry to sustain anything, so in the late dry season the water is the scarce thing and the animals come to it — in order, all day, while you sit still and watch the queue.

Sat down at a pool of water at seven in the morning and did not move again until lunch, and in that time the entire country came past me for a drink, in an order everyone but me appeared to understand. Nobody looked for anything. Everything arrived. I have never been so successfully lazy.

The short answer

Etosha is a national park in northern Namibia built around the Etosha Pan, an endorheic salt flat of roughly 4,800 square kilometres and about 120 to 130 kilometres long. The pan is the floor of a lake once fed by the Kunene River; tectonic movement redirected the river toward the Atlantic and the lake dried, leaving a mineral crust visible from orbit. Because the pan itself supports almost nothing, water in the surrounding country is scarce and concentrated, and in the late dry season game gathers at a small number of waterholes in extraordinary numbers. The park was proclaimed in 1907, became a national park in 1967, and has been a Ramsar wetland site since 1995.

Why it's worth knowing

Etosha inverts the usual arrangement.

In most parks you drive, and you look, and the looking is the activity. Here the pan at the centre is a dead surface — too saline for vegetation, dry for most or all of the year — and the country around it is arid. Water exists at a limited number of springs and waterholes, and in the late dry season it is the only water there is. So the animals go to it. All of them. Elephant, giraffe, zebra, oryx, springbok, black rhino, lion — arriving through the day in a rough and observable order, tolerating one another because the alternative is thirst.

The instruction to visitors is therefore not to search but to stop. Get to a waterhole early and stay. Several rest camps have floodlit waterholes that continue the show after dark.

There is a second inversion, larger and less visible. The dead lake feeds the living country by blowing away. In the dry season, winds lift saline dust off the pan and carry it across Namibia and out over the southern Atlantic. NASA's Earth Observatory notes that this salt enrichment supplies minerals to soils downwind — minerals some wildlife depends on — while making farming harder on the same ground. A vanished lake, still fertilising the region, one dust storm at a time.

And Etosha is not alone in being a corpse. Three of the great landscapes of southern Africa are the same event. The Kalahari Basin's drainage was rearranged by tectonic movement, and rivers that once filled inland seas went elsewhere. Lake Makgadikgadi lost its rivers and became a salt complex. The Okavango stopped reaching the sea and became a delta that ends in sand. And the Kunene turned west, leaving Etosha. Africa Geographic notes that Etosha's lake probably died around the same time the Okavango Delta formed. One tectonic argument, three of the strangest places on the continent.

The field notes

The name, and who got it wrong

Most sources translate Etosha as great white place, from the Ndonga, and it is a good description of a chalk-coloured crust that dazzles.

The Namibian Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism tells it differently. Its account gives the Oshindonga name as Etotha, meaning the place where no plants grow — and says early European traders, unable to pronounce it, produced Etosha instead. If that is right, the name everyone uses is a mispronunciation, and the original was not about the colour but about the sterility.

Both readings are in circulation, and they describe the same surface from different angles. The Hai‖om San name for the pan is given as Khubus, carrying a similar meaning.

The colonial layer sits on top and is visible at the gates: Andersson Gate for Charles Andersson, who with Francis Galton became the first Europeans recorded as sighting the pan in 1851; Von Lindequist Gate for the German governor who proclaimed the reserve in 1907. A third, King Nehale Gate, is named for the Ondonga king who resisted German expansion — a later correction to the map, and a deliberate one.

A park that has been shrinking since the day it was made

When the reserve was proclaimed in 1907 it was enormous, and accounts of quite how enormous vary: Africa Geographic gives around 80,000 km², NASA's Earth Observatory around 100,000 km², and one Namibian operator specifies 99,526 km². At the time it was described as the largest game reserve in the world, reaching from the Kunene River in the north to beyond Outjo in the south.

Boundary reductions through the twentieth century cut it to roughly 22,000 km² — figures between 22,000 and 22,750 appear — removing land that is now communal farmland and the Kaokoveld. A perimeter fence went up between 1958 and the early 1970s. It became a national park in 1967, passed to independent Namibian administration in 1990, and its western section reopened to visitors in 2010.

It remains larger than several European countries, and it is the smaller quarter of what it was.

Fish bones under the salt

The pan is dry now and mostly dry clay, cracking into hexagons as it dehydrates. Only in years of high rainfall does water collect, typically to a depth of around ten centimetres, and then only for a few months before heat and wind take it back.

When it does fill, it becomes the only known mass breeding site for flamingos in Namibia — great white pelicans arrive too, and counts running to around a million birds have been reported, peaking around January and February.

That the pan was once something else entirely is not in doubt, and the evidence is under the surface. The Namibian ministry records excavated fossils of marsh-dwelling antelope — sitatunga, lechwe, tsessebe — and a catfish ninety centimetres long. Animals that need permanent deep water, in a place where a puddle is now an event.

When the lake died is genuinely unresolved. Published figures range from about 16,000 years ago to around 10 million, and at least one popular account gives over 100 million, which is difficult to reconcile with the region's geology. The spread is five orders of magnitude, and this entry does not choose between them.

The Relic

A drinking order at a waterhole. Not an object but a sequence, and it is the thing people come back for: which animals will wait, which will not, which will approach only when the elephants leave, and how a hundred creatures that would otherwise avoid one another share a pool because there is no other pool.

Getting there

Etosha is in northern Namibia, roughly four to five hours' drive north of Windhoek, which has international flights via Johannesburg, Cape Town, Frankfurt and Doha. There are also airstrips serving lodges for those flying in.

Namibia is one of the easiest African countries to drive yourself, and Etosha is part of the reason: the main roads within the park are graded and passable in a two-wheel-drive vehicle, and the park is set up for independent visitors as well as guided ones. Distances are long and fuel stops are sparse — plan the tank, not the map.

The gates are Andersson (Okaukuejo, south), Von Lindequist (Namutoni, east), King Nehale (north) and Galton (west). Rest camps inside the park — Okaukuejo, Halali, Namutoni — have the floodlit waterholes and book up well ahead in high season. Lodges outside the gates are generally more comfortable and cost you the early mornings.

Season decides everything. June to October is the dry season and the reason most people come: water is scarce, the game concentrates, and the waterholes deliver. January to March is the wet season — the pan may hold water, the flamingos and pelicans arrive, the grass is high, and the game disperses because it no longer has to queue.

Practical notes. Gates open at sunrise and close at sunset, and the times are enforced. You must stay in your vehicle except at designated points. Glare off the pan is severe. Malaria risk in northern Namibia varies by season and source, and is worth checking with a travel clinic rather than a brochure.
