Flew over what is usually a white salt plain and found a sea, in a desert, with birds on islands that were not there last year. Somebody explained that the water fell as rain in another state months ago and has been walking here ever since, and that nobody knows how the birds found out. I asked twice. Nobody knows.
The short answer
Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre is Australia’s largest lake and contains the lowest natural point on the continent, roughly fifteen metres below sea level. It is endorheic: about one sixth of Australia drains toward it rather than toward any ocean, and most of that water evaporates long before arriving. The lake receives around 140 millimetres of rain a year and is a salt-crusted plain for most of its existence. When rain falls heavily enough in the catchments of south-western Queensland, floodwater travels for months down the Diamantina and Cooper Creek to reach it, and the pan becomes an inland sea of up to 9,500 square kilometres. NASA records that it has filled completely three times in the past 160 years.
Why it's worth knowing
The lake itself is remarkable, but the birds are the part nobody can explain.
When the water arrives, pelicans arrive with it. Not a few — during the flood of 1989 and 1990 an estimated two hundred thousand pelicans gathered here, reckoned at the time to be around eighty per cent of Australia’s entire population. They come from the coast, from other inland wetlands, from hundreds and sometimes thousands of kilometres away, and they begin arriving as the water does.
Consider what that requires. The rain fell in Queensland. The water then took months to wind down river channels across the desert. There is no signal a bird on the New South Wales coast could reasonably receive. And yet they turn up, in numbers, in the right place, at roughly the right time, having set off across a continent to reach a lake that is dry in most years of a pelican’s life.
Professor Richard Kingsford, who has studied Australian waterbirds for decades, is direct about it: “It is one of the great mysteries for Australia — how do these birds know where the water is and head off?” The candidate explanations are infrasound carried long distances, changes in barometric pressure, and the smell of wet salt on the wind. Satellite trackers small enough to fit a bird — Kingsford calls them little backpacks — have begun to produce ideas. None of it is settled.
And what they are coming for was also waiting. Brine shrimp eggs lie dormant in the dry soil for years and hatch when the water reaches them. Fish are flushed down the rivers from Queensland. A desert produces, within weeks, enough food to support hundreds of thousands of birds — then dries, and the whole arrangement goes back to sleep for a decade.

Water that takes months to arrive
The mechanism is worth following because it explains the timing.
Rain falls in south-western Queensland — the Diamantina catchment alone covers around 119,000 square kilometres. The Diamantina runs past Birdsville, crosses into South Australia, spreads through Goyder Lagoon, and enters the Warburton River for a final 150 kilometres to the lake. Cooper Creek arrives by its own route. The straight-line distance understates the journey considerably, because these rivers wander.
In the 2025 event, the Bureau of Meteorology tracked floodwaters that fell in January and February moving steadily south, with water reaching the lake around the start of May and continuing to arrive for months afterwards. NASA’s Terra satellite recorded the water entering the northern basin and spreading roughly 120 kilometres south to Madigan Gulf and Belt Bay.
Most years, none of it gets there. The water sinks into sand or evaporates on the floodplain. Some reaches the lake every few years. A complete fill is a generational event: NASA gives three in 160 years, with a record depth of six metres in 1974, and the ABC described the 2025 flood as approaching capacity for the fourth time.
A lake that was permanent, once
A hundred thousand years ago this was not a salt pan. The basin held a lake ten times its present size, fed by permanent rivers, in a landscape that was green.
The animals around it were correspondingly unfamiliar: giant wombats, giant kangaroos, and the marsupial lion — a predator with no living equivalent. The climate dried, the rivers became ephemeral, the lake became a memory that fills occasionally, and the megafauna went.
So the flood years are not an aberration in the life of this place. They are a much-reduced echo of what it used to be all the time.
Whose lake it is
The Arabana people hold native title over the lake, recognised through a legal process that, in the words of the lake’s management plan, established in Australian law what Arabana people had always known: that their connection to this country had remained unbroken since Europeans arrived. The Dieri people are recognised as native title holders over the eastern portion. In 2012 the lake was formally renamed to include the Arabana name, Kati Thanda.
The park is co-managed, and the management has consequences for visitors. Swimming, boating, driving on the lake surface and landing aircraft on it are restricted or prohibited — partly for cultural reasons, partly because a salt crust with water beneath it is treacherous, and partly to protect nesting birds from precisely the sort of enthusiasm a rare flood generates.
There is also a yacht club, which sounds like a joke and is not. It has existed for a quarter of a century, sails when it can, and held its twenty-fifth anniversary regatta during the recent flood on water fed by Cooper Creek.
Seeing it, which mostly means flying
From the ground, a full Lake Eyre is a line of water at the edge of an enormous flat, and the scale is impossible to read. From the air it is a shallow sea in a desert, with bird colonies on islands and the colours running from white through pink to a deep improbable blue.
This is one of the few places in this guide where a scenic flight is not a luxury but the sensible way to see the thing. Operators fly from William Creek, Marree, Coober Pedy and further afield, and in flood years they are busy.
The roads are the complication. The tracks into this country are unsealed, and the same rain that fills the lake closes them — sometimes for weeks. During the 2025 event the outback community of Innamincka was cut off by road entirely. Airstrips continue to operate when roads do not, which is another reason flying is the reliable option.
- Fly. From the ground it is a distant line and you will not understand it.
- Check the road report rather than the weather.
- Go in a flood year if one comes, and cancel other plans to do it.
- Look for the small birds too, not only the pelicans.
- Stay off the crust. It is not as solid as it looks.
The Lake Eyre Yacht Club. It has existed for twenty-five years on a lake that has filled completely three times in 160 years, and it sails whenever there is water to sail on — holding its twenty-fifth anniversary regatta during the recent flood, on water fed down Cooper Creek. Getting there
How to get there. The lake sits in the far north of South Australia, several hundred kilometres from anywhere with a supermarket. The usual land approaches are the Oodnadatta Track to William Creek or Marree, both unsealed and both requiring a suitable vehicle, or the Stuart Highway to Coober Pedy and across. Halligan Bay and Level Post Bay give vehicle access to the shore, on 4WD tracks.
Flying is the sensible option, especially in flood. Scenic flights operate from William Creek, Marree and Coober Pedy, and there are longer air safaris out of the capital cities. From the ground a filled lake reads as a distant line of water; from the air it reads as a sea. Operators book out quickly when a flood is running.
Check the roads, not the forecast. The rain that fills the lake also closes the tracks, sometimes for weeks at a time, and closures are enforced — driving a closed outback road does real damage and attracts real fines. The South Australian outback road report is the authority. Airstrips generally keep working when roads do not.

When to go. May to October for tolerable temperatures; summer here is severe and the tracks are worse. Whether there is water is a separate question entirely, and one nobody can promise you — a filled lake is a generational event, and even a partial fill depends on rain that fell in another state months earlier.
Carry everything. Fuel, water, spares, and a means of communication that does not rely on a mobile network. Distances between anything at all are long.
