The short answer

Torres del Paine is a Chilean national park in the Magallanes Region of southern Patagonia, roughly 112 kilometres north of Puerto Natales, administered by CONAF. It was established on 13 May 1959 as Parque Nacional de Turismo Lago Grey and took its present name in 1970. Its centre is the Cordillera del Paine, a granite laccolith emplaced in a handful of magmatic pulses between about 12.59 and 12.50 million years ago and since stripped bare by glaciation. It has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1978. Published figures for its area range from 181,414 to 242,242 hectares depending on the source.

Why it's worth knowing

Patagonia is not short of dramatic granite; Fitz Roy rises from the same ice field just across the Argentine border. What distinguishes the Paine massif is how legible it is.

Most mountain ranges are accumulations — separate intrusions stacked over tens of millions of years, tangled together. The Cordillera del Paine is a single body of granite, built in a few pulses over roughly ninety thousand years, then planed open by ice. Structural geologists use it as a reference site for laccolith construction for precisely that reason.

The two-tone look of the Cuernos del Paine is the same story made visible. Pale granite below, dark cap above — the dark rock is hornfels, marine mudstone roughly 90 to 100 million years old that was baked where the rising magma touched it. You are looking at the contact.

The field notes

From Lago Grey to a Biosphere Reserve

Park histories generally credit the travel writer Florence Dixie as the first foreign visitor to describe the towers, comparing them to Cleopatra's Needles in a book published in 1880. Scientific expeditions followed, including the Swedish explorer Otto Nordenskiöld, whose name is now on one of the park's principal lakes, and the Salesian missionary and mountaineer Alberto De Agostini, whose photographs circulated widely in Europe.

Formal protection came on 13 May 1959, under the name Parque Nacional de Turismo Lago Grey — named for the glacier, not the towers. The present name dates from 1970. The boundaries were not settled until 1977, when the Italian explorer Guido Monzino donated roughly 12,000 hectares of adjoining land to Chile, and UNESCO designated the Biosphere Reserve the following year.

It is not a World Heritage Site. A number of tourism sources say otherwise, and some are emphatic about it. Chile placed the park on UNESCO's Tentative List in 1994, jointly with Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, and it has remained there since.

Ninety thousand years of construction

The Cordillera del Paine is technically a laccolith: magma that spread sideways between existing rock layers and bowed the overlying rock upward as it thickened.

High-precision uranium-lead dating of zircon crystals, published by Jürgen Michel and colleagues in Geology in 2008, put the first and last granite sheets at 12.59 and 12.50 million years ago — a construction window of roughly ninety thousand years. Later work including the underlying mafic rock gives the full complex a build time of about 162,000 years and a volume near 88 cubic kilometres.

Then the ice. Pleistocene glaciation, peaking around 18,000 years ago, removed the sedimentary cover and left the granite standing. The polished and striated rock around Lake Grey is the same process, still legible.

Fire, and a night on the pass

Three major fires since 1985 have been caused by visitors: a 1985 blaze, an overturned camp stove in 2005, and in December 2011 a roll of burning toilet paper left by an Israeli backpacker who was arrested and later settled with prosecutors. Reported burn areas for 2011 drifted as the fire spread — officials cited roughly 11,000 hectares on 31 December, then close to 13,000 days later, with later retrospectives citing near 17,000. Lenga forest regrows slowly; CONAF has estimated a century or more.

The worst recent incident involved no fire. On 17 November 2025 a blizzard with gusts reported at 193 kilometres per hour struck the O Circuit near John Garner Pass. Five hikers — a Mexican couple, a German couple and a British woman — died of hypothermia, and 27 people were injured. The regional prosecutor opened an investigation.

The detail that turned it from a weather story into an accountability story: there were no rangers on duty at Los Perros that night, because voting is mandatory in Chile and they had gone home for the presidential election. There is no phone signal there. Nobody on the trail had anyone to ask about the weather.

The Relic

A chip of the Grey Glacier in a glass. The catamaran that carries hikers across Lake Grey serves whisky or pisco sour over ice cut from bergs calved off the glacier's face minutes earlier, and it cracks and pops as air trapped for centuries gets out. The drink is included in the ticket. It is the only place on the route where the landscape makes a noise in your hand.

Getting there

Fly to Teniente Julio Gallardo Airport at Puerto Natales, served from Santiago, or to the larger airport at Punta Arenas 312 kilometres south. From Puerto Natales, buses and transfers reach the main entrance in about two to two and a half hours. Entry tickets must be bought in advance online through CONAF's reservation platform; cash is not accepted at the gate. Both the W Trek and the O Circuit require a separate booking for every night's accommodation, and peak-season beds sell out months ahead.

The practical warning is about exposed passes, not trails in general. After the November 2025 deaths on John Garner Pass, guides now urge checking same-day forecasts and waiting out storms at lower camps rather than committing to a crossing in worsening conditions. Weather here changes faster than a forecast refreshes; a hiker who crossed the day before that blizzard reported clear skies and light wind.

Is Torres del Paine a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

No. Torres del Paine has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1978, but it has never been inscribed as a World Heritage Site, despite that claim appearing on a number of tourism sources. Chile placed the park on UNESCO's Tentative List in 1994, jointly with Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, where it remains.
